Global Youth Service Day- Project Sticker Shock

Vinton Dogwood Festival Parade - April 24, 2010

RAYSAC participated in the Vinton Dogwood Festival Parade. The grand prize car for After Prom Grand Finale was shown off and youth leaders from William Byrd High School helped carry the large "Bee Balloon."

 

Valley Wide Town Hall Meeting- "Alcohol and Youth"

RAYSAC and Roanoke County Prevention Council partnered to present a town hall meeting on April 20, 2010. This youth led meeting focused on presenting a community snapshot on access to and availability of alcohol. Youth presented data from various surveys conducted throughout the Valley as well as information from their own personal experiences. The focus was on educating the community and facilitating discussion on how our community can work together to change the environment conducive to underage drinking.

Youth leaders from Botetourt County, Roanoke City, Roanoke County, and Salem were recognized for their commitment to making a positive difference in their communities. Four local businesses were also recognized for their commitment to the prevention of underage drinking. The businesses recognized included ABC store manager Tim Hurst, First Team Auto Mall, PMI inc., and WDBJ 7.

RAYSAC Steering Committee Holiday Luncheon

RAYSAC's Steering Committee Holiday Luncheon was held Thursday December 10, 2009. A year review was given to report the many activities and projects that were done in 2009. RAYSAC sure has been busy!

Holiday Health Fest for Kids 2009

RAYSAC participated in the second annual Holiday Health Fest for Kids. The Health Fest was held at Valley View Mall on December 5 from 10:00am-2:00pm.

There were representatives from several agencies throughout the Roanoke Valley. Learning stations were available for children to participate and learn about various topics including nutrition, mental health, bullying, dental health, physical health, and drug and alcohol prevention.

RAYSAC's R.E.A.L. Team youth leaders led our learning station which included educational games for children and information for parents.

 

2009 Prevention Planning Summit

CITIZEN VOLUNTEER AWARD

A person who is a volunteer who devotes a large amount of time and resources to prevention because they are passionate about it and they are not compensated otherwise

2009 Award goes to Donna Henderson

PROFESSIONAL SERVICE AWARD

A person who is paid to do prevention work but goes above and beyond the call of duty 

This could be given to someone who serves RAYSAC or their local Prevention Planning team in a professional capacity (Blue Ridge Behavioral Health, School System, Law Enforcement, Parks & Rec).

2009 Award goes to Brooks Michael

THE SPIRIT OF PREVENTION - CONNIE POINDEXTER ROANOKE VALLEY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

A person who has made a difference in the entire Roanoke Valley in the field of prevention 

This is an award that doesn't necessarily have to take in just the past year or so, but a large period (years) of commitment to the cause.  It can go to a volunteer or a paid professional.
